There is definitely something about British film productions like this one that is, far too often, lacking in Hollywood musical extravaganzas, and the name of that "something" is "charm". Chiwetal Ejiofar was absolutely fantastic. Utterly British, thought provoking, have watched it over and over again - Superb film I tried two different discs (returned the first and now returning the second). This movie is about old-fashioned values like decency and unselfishness. We don't know where this distributor is making or sending from, but this is not a professional quality legit product. While I can't say this about many movies these days, this one took me back to the pre-television days when I was just a ten year old kid because, in my opinion, it was just plain uncomplicated fun. Very amusing and entertaining with Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as a cross-dresser who inspires the change of direction in the factory and also does several song and dance routines. The shoes being produced are not selling like they did in the past, and he is forced to lay off workers who had worked for his father for years. He really is a major talent and can play any kind of role. It leads you into, if not suprising, some nice new ideas and you come out really feeling for the people, the issues and even for the shoe company's future. So, the story would not seem promising on first look... a drag queen saves a failing English shoe factory.. I don't go with the hype from reviewers about wooden acting, alternate endings, and go your own way etc.etc.- the film is set in the Trickers factory in Northampton, the bit actors, the background people are skilled shoemakers, and they do make bespoke gentleman's shoes, very succesfully in real life - I wear them, and they are supremely comfortable, so looked at from a practical point of view, Lola should be well satisfied. A filmed version of the popular stage musical, in which a feisty drag queen attempts to rescue a shoe factory by designing fabulous and fetishistic footwear. Entertaining, well made, feel good film. Funny, poignant, mind and heart expanding, very sweet and totally entertaining.
